i’d just like to state that i’m much more likely to reply faster to threads with people that i speak with ooc. this isn’t because i don’t want to write with you, or because i don’t like our threads as much. it’s just that talking to people on a regular basis gives me a lot of inspiration, especially if we’ve been discussing our characters’ relationship, or other potential plotlines. so if you’re wondering where your thread is, i can promise i’m not ignoring you. i just want you to understand how my creative process works most of the time.
The key isn’t winning–or losing. It’s making the attempt. I may never be what I ought to be, WANT to be–but how will I know unless I try? Sure, it’s scary, but what’s the alternative? STAGNATION–a safer, more terrible form of death. Not of the body, but of the spirit. An animal knows what it is and accepts it. A man may know what he is–but he questions. He dreams. He strives. Changes.
It started with an idea. The spark that started the fire was EXPANSION. Our Captain spoke, and gave the idea form. He said the words, and made it REAL. He said…
at some point i really should talk about the learning repair shop tony sets up in shelbyville. which…i guess…some point…could be now or whatever.
anyway, it’s something that comes about approximately ten minutes after he retires because he does not handle a lot of free time with no structure well, and at least in this case it’s self-motivated, because while he definitely still has projects on the go at all times, that’s fifty plus hours of his week after retirement that suddenly become available with absolutely nothing to fill them with (and he probably drives bucky crazy with his climbing the walls with lack of constant stimulation).
so. cap’s place. (look, i know, but this is tony we’re talking about and he is not good at naming things and when in doubt, reach for what inspires you, i guess.) it’s nothing fancy; it’s not sleek or sterile or chic or anything, it’s a fucking functional repair shop, it’s what it says on the tin. it smells like burnt motor oil and transmission fluid and axle grease and hot shaved metal and ozone and gojo orange pumice hand cleaner and the concrete is epoxied just to make easier to clean, not because it looks good. his office in the building is a disaster of stuff and sometimes al or nugget tag along to act as quality inspection.
it works like this: you can apply, and if you show aptitude, you get hired (because this ain’t no unpaid internship and tony’s known for being fair, but a taskmaster, to work for - you earn that paycheck). and then you get put through the gauntlet to get you ready for your ase certifications. everything - from simple bulb replacements and oil changes to engine rebuilds and replacements - get inspected before they get sent back home to who they belong to. tony’s a fairly good teacher - he’s good at rewinding and breaking things down without the technobabble when he needs to be (if he’s giving you technobabble he either expects you to know what he’s talking about or he’s being an ass), and he hasn’t had anyone wash since starting it. probably because it’s a known thing he pays well and is patient where it counts.
but why, you might ask, would he do something so small? why not help in bigger ways? because he already has. there’s a new st. louis branch of stark he’d gotten off the ground before he retired, and a manufacturing facility outside of town he’d gotten started before he left life as a ceo that’s since been finished and taken off, so he’s added several hundred jobs to the general local area. he sponsors all kinds of local things (he’s really leaned hard into this community thing and it’s kind of hilarious, to be honest). but this is a labor of love project. not only does it pass on skills he has above and beyond the average individual to other people, it’s something he enjoys, generally, as a hobby, so it’s not a chore to get up and head out in the morning. and once it takes off it allows him the wiggle room to act as iron man, make avengers meetings, all that fun superhero stuff he does without having to screw something else on his agenda. win/win for everyone.
